Return to paradise. Well Almost. Usually returning to Nicaragua in july we were used to seeing everything at least 1 month into the rainy season which usually ment green lush tropical landscape and cool nights with rainshowers. However we came down early and are still catching the tail end of the dry season. Definetly not anything to write home about. Everything is dry dry dry! Its unusually windy right now which is nice as long as your not standing on a dirt road otherwise you better hold your breath, plug your nose, and close your eyes.
The wind did make for a fun arrival to the island though... not! We took the little boat (lanchita) and embarked on a 1 hour rollercoster ride with all the side to side up and downs and squirlly feelings in the stomach included. Thanks to deep concentration and beeing preocupied with making sure our luggage didnt go overboard we made it to shore without any casualties.
We both agree on one thing though, its good to be back! As dry as it is here its still very humid and Im not one to complain about humidity, my skin drinks up every drop of moisture and relishes in the sweet elasticity that comes with not feeling dried and withered up. Waking up every morning with only 1 responsibility that of preaching the good news is a breath of fresh air! No job, no boss, no bombarding advertisements everywhere we turn, and not having a tv means no depressing news to hear about everyday, ahhhh this is the life, and we highly recommend it! Simplicity surrounds us everywhere....I even tried making my own cheese today. Sure there are many challenges and obstacles but over the last 3 years we've really gotten to know most of them which leads me to believe that it only gets easier. For example the following tail relates how we came to have a motor cycle and were we to have this experience even just last year Im positive we would have had a total melt down, but this time....well for the most part we kept our emotions in check.
The motor cyle.
A brother in our hall kindly told us that he owned a motorcyle in rivas. (not on the island) He told us we were welcome to use it while we were here but that it probably needed some work and might not even start, it was at his mother in laws place.
We expected the worst and hoped for the best. Obstacle #1: We missed the early boat ride over, thus leaving 2 hours later then we planned. No big deal we just need to hurry. Mother in law is leaving at 2:30 last boat leaves for the island at 5. Obstacle #2: When we finally see the bike it looks good but then a gas tube crumbles in our hands. Ok, no biggy we find out theres a moto mechanic 4 block away, so we walk...fast. Its great he sells us another tube. Obstacle #3: Just as we're about to ride off into the sunset we notice theres no license plate. Ok this is a big deal but surely its somewhere in the house, so we search. Nope cant find it. Mother in law is now late to leave so we improvise and make a plate out of sheetrock and screw it into the back. Obstacle #4: Cant get moto to start and kirk has to run jump it... that was fun to watch. Obstacle #5: getting insurance. actually this went pretty well. Obstacle #6: (did I mention its like 100 degrees out side) we blow a tire on the way back to the boat. This is where one might start losing it so to speak, the boat leaves in approx. 10 minutes but now we have to get a new tire. We walk the distance of about a football field and wait to have it replaced, we know it could have been alot worse. We make in time for the 5 o clock boat which is no big deal except for obstacle #7: We have no headlight and now need to drive about 20 min. in the near dark. We race against time eating the bugs being thrown in our face along the way but alas we're still about 10 min. away and its dark...really dark! We're ok though, a fellow motorcyclist kindly drives alongside us allowing us to use his headlight, protecting us and our fellow islanders from on coming danger. We were sooo exhausted that we went to bed at 8:30. What an adventure right! Well if you come to visit us we promise to fill your days with similiar life changing experiences. :)
Nobody worry though, we'll be safer in the future. Until next time. Love kirk and kells
