#14 To the baths I say!

Not too long ago we went on a mini adventure.  High above the mountain tops with our heads above the clouds we wound and twisted and turned our way through the valleys ever so slowly decending apon a happy little village at the bottom.  The village is named llanguat (dont ask me what that means because I dont know).  I call it a "mini" adventure because the van ride was only 1 1/2 hrs down and 2hrs back up, and also because we only spent half a day there but adventure it was never the less.  Pictures couldnt capture the beauty that was all around us.  There were giant puffy clouds that cast streams of light on the sides of the mountains where little villages (15-20 houses) were grouped, dark storm clouds way off in the distance where you could see it sweeping down on hillsides, donkeys grazing on green breezy grass, sheep wondering around and all the while one really does feel like they are litteraly high above the world.  It really was mesmerizing.

The reason for this little adventure was too preach a small town that gets preached only once a year and when we finished relax our tired feet in the local hot springs.

About 20 of us went which was way more than expected and with that in mind it only took about 2 hrs to preach the whole town.  People here were so generous sharing their fruits and vegetables.  Theres even a picture of a bunch of us gnawing on sugar cane that was given to us, it was tasty but it actually made my teeth hurt.  I went to one door where an 85 year old man was really excited to see us.  About a year ago he had gone to Lima and while there a brother had given him a bible and the greatest man book.  I dont know why but I was surprised to see that he was nearly finished with the book.  We talked at length with him and answered all the questions he had accumulated while reading the book.  Hopefully he's still around by the time the group makes its return trip.

Alas we enjoyed lunch that was prepared beforehand by a sister and was brought and distrubuted.  We changed our attire to fancy swimsuits (which nobody actually wears, they call shorts and a shirt a "swimsuit", when in peru do as the peruvians.  We crossed the river to the otherside where we found the source of the hot springs.  It was way too hot to get in which was deduced by the steam and bubbles coming from the surface.  So we did what anybody would do on an adventure and we followed the stream until it let out into the nearby river and finally finding the perfect temperature we sat and never got back up.  You have to keep in mind that for a lot of the people here hot water is a true luxury, most shower with cold water even though its 55 degrees outside...talk about cold!  So to take a bath or sit in a small pool of hot water was what I imagine to be the equivalent of going to the spa is for us.  Most didnt want to leave but due to the time we had to be on our way eventually.  Apparently the really deep down mud is great for the skin so we put kirk on digging duty and as he evenly distributed his findings we all (guys included) generously applied it to our faces and eventually all over.  Nobody said how hard it was going to be to remove, you ladies out there just imagine having a 1/4 inch thick layer of water proof mascara all over your face and body with only water to remove it. For a while I was a lovely shade of red from all the intense scrubbing mixed with an exotic under shade of grey.  Everybody seemed fine returing home with a lovely black glow to there skin but seeings how we had to go to the market right away before it closed I was a little humored by peoples reaction.  Never the less we enjoyed a wonderfull day full of, as I said earlier, adventure.

lots of love,
Kirk and kelly
